In honor of Valentine’s day, I want to share a story about new friendships and island love.

I’m super bummed out today because my favorite person on the island is leaving tomorrow. We met through work. She crewed with me on the sunset sails and we quickly became friends. I was super excited to have a real good female friend. Those who know me well know that the majority of my friends are male. I just don’t feel like I fit in with other women. I don’t like typical female things like shopping, talking on the phone, gossiping about other women, and complaining about my man. I like sports, and cursing, and telling dirty jokes. And so does she! I am funny and sarcastic and laid back. And so is she! I can tease her and give her shit and she gives it right back. She doesn’t get hurt, offended, upset, or take it personally. That is a rare find in a woman. Lol.

Plus, she’s well traveled, interesting, and educated, so we can share life experiences and actually have intelligent conversation, which is so rare on the island. I’ve finally met another girl who is as cool as I am, and… she’s leaving. Go figure. After being here for a year, she’s off to her next big adventure in Alaska. I guess this is one of the downfalls of living on an island; No one stays too long, and new friends come and go all too frequently.

At the same time that I was making a new friend, Rosco was also getting friendly with her little dog, Chloe. We’ve been watching Chloe while her owners are off island, and they watched Rosco for us while we were back home. The two of them have become inseparable. They eat together, sleep together, play together. They even both attack us with kisses in the morning. I’m sure Rosco is going to miss his little girlfriend as much as I will miss my new friend. But, I have a feeling this isn’t the last we’ll see of them. We’ll probably all end up living together on an island in Hawaii some day.
